Welcome to Part Time Songs

This is the soon to be home of Part Time Songs, a very lazy, casual record label consisting mainly of me, Sunil Sawani, and anyone I can convince to make music with me.

All the releases will be digital-only MP3 downloads (probably as .zip files, and usually including some form of “artwork” with it). I haven’t worked out the details on all that yet, but I’m sure I’ll get it soon. Oh yeah, podcasts too. (Probably.)

Basically, the thing here is this — I don’t have a lot of time* to make full proper releases in physical (or digital, for that matter) format, most days. I’m currently working on a proper EP** that is in the process of being written and recorded as we speak, but that comes around, say, once every 3 years. I also can’t get myself to write a full album of material. It just hasn’t happened. But, luckily, I also really like making music and just putting it out there for people to hear***. I don’t care if money is made (though I may spend money to make it… which makes me think a donation system might be nice… but we’ll get to that when it comes up again…). I do like feedback, though, and the part where music is fun and is enjoyed and people like it and you’ve made someone’s 3 minutes (y’know, pop song length).

So, I suppose the mission statement of Part Time Songs is: Release good songs, with not necessarily the highest production values, but what does it matter if the songs are good?

See that? The mission statement is clever… it poses a question back to you, the potential listener. And that makes you think.

So anyway… release number 1 on Part Time Songs will be coming sometime probably late spring/early summer. In the meantime, read my main blog and sample some of the music I’ve already got out on the web.

* There are various reasons for this, namely laziness, a demanding full-time career, and a short attention span for my own musical output.

** You can read more about the progress of that at howdoesitknow.com. It’s being recorded NOT in my basement, which is where most of Part Time Songs’ releases will be recorded. It is also being mixed and mastered by a guy with a great ear for production, whereas most of the Part Time Songs’ releases will not.

*** I did a project I called Song of the Month a few years back that served as a great way to generate songs for the band (The Low Hello) I later formed. That was fun… This label is going to sort of be an extension of that.
